Homemade Apple Sauce: The Perfect Way to Celebrate Apple Season

Apple season is here, and there’s no better way to make the most of it than with a batch of homemade apple sauce. Why Apple Sauce?

The Simple Ingredients

One of the reasons apple sauce is so popular is its simplicity. At its core, all you need is:

  • Fresh apples (sweet, sharp, or a mix depending on your preference)

  • A little sugar or honey (optional, depending on the sweetness of your apples)

  • A splash of lemon juice to balance the flavour

  • Warming spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for a seasonal twist

Simple Homemade Apple Sauce Recipe 🍎

Ingredients (makes about 3–4 small jars):

  • 6 medium apples (any variety, or a mix for depth of flavour)

  • 100ml water

  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional, adjust to taste)

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional, for warmth)

  • A squeeze of lemon juice

Method:

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks.

  2. Place the apples, water, and lemon juice into a saucepan.

  3. Cover and simmer over medium heat for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft.

  4. Add sugar and cinnamon (if using), then stir well.

  5. For a chunky sauce, mash with a fork or potato masher. For a smooth finish, blend until silky.

  6. Allow to cool slightly, then spoon into clean, sterilised glass jars and seal.

Storage tip: Keep refrigerated and use within a week — or preserve in sterilised jars for longer storage.
